Hoc House was a collaboration exhibited at the 2013 Guerilla Truck Show that acknowledges that sometimes improvised solutions are the best ones. Drawing from ad hoc and DIY culture, students and alumni of SAIC's Designed Objects department have designed a home for the urban dweller with small spaces and budgets in mind. Made in a few days, each unit in Hoc House addresses an element of human need: sleep, work, clean, comfort, and company. Each designer took cost, time, and material accessibility into consideration so that each piece is efficient and easy to recreate without the need of complex production processes.
Crate Chairs were designed as they were built. Rapidly working from a base of available materials, the chairs are made only of plastic crates, zip ties, and wooden dowels. With budget and time in mind, it took only four hours and five dollars per chair. Complete with storage space, they are lightweight, easy to recreate, and the perfect addition to an Ad Hoc home.
